The Psychology Behind Our Mood and Reactions

Have you ever started off a day feeling great, then...WHAM...out of no where, you find yourself in a foul mood? You wonder, "What happened to put me in this mood?" You try to point out the last person, place or thing you contacted. But there's much more to it than that.

There is a term used by Anthony Robbins, in his Personal Power II program, called Neuro-Associative Conditioning, which he refers to as a linking of a specific event with a specific feeling. A specific feeling can easily be triggered by a sight, sound, touch, smell or taste that occurred during a prior event. This kind of conditioning is rooted in behavioral science dating back to 1901 in the work of Ivan Pavlov (Pavolv's Dogs).

* Pete grew up with a verbally abusive Father. It caused him great anxiety. Pete's Father used to point his finger while yelling. Twenty years later, Pete is grown with a great job but an ornery boss. One day his boss enters Pete's office to discuss an important topic. While speaking loudly, the boss points his finger in much the same way that Pete's Father did. Instantly, Pete's stomach turns and he become anxious. Peter continues to get anxious around his boss.
* Jake's date was wearing a very alluring perfume on their recent date. The date itself was quite passionate. The following day when Jake gets into his car he smells the lingering scent of his her perfume and becomes transfixed with joy.
* Sara eats lunch at a new restaurant in town. While eating, she gets sick because of the flu. A month later, her friends ask her out to lunch to the same restaurant in town. Sara gets nauseated thinking about that restaurant, so she suggests another one.

Understanding conditioning and how it affects the decisions that people make is key to understanding people. It is also a great tool to better understand yourself and your own behavior and mood changes.

I've researched the topic of personality to better understand and relate to different people in business and personal settings. I've found that it's equally crucial to my success that I understand my own moods and reactions to different people in changing business situations. Learning more about conditioning has clarified a lot of my own questions about myself. While people have always been fascinated by human behavior, it wasn't until the late 19th century that psychology began to be considered an actual science. Wilhelm Wundt established the first psychology lab in Germany. He believed in a school of thought called structuralism-believing that certain structures in the mind caused behavior. Over the course of psychology's history, different schools of thought have competed for prominence. Here are the major schools of thought in psychology:

oStructuralism. The belief that there is a connection between sensation and emotion and behavior.

oFunctionalism. The idea that the human brain is much like a computer, designed to carry out specific functions.

oPsychoanalysis. Created by Sigmund Freud, this school of thought believes in the rigorous probing of an individual's personal problems, motives, goals and attitudes as a way to heal the mind.

oBehaviorism. Proponents of this theory essentially hold that all human behavior is learned from one's surrounding context and environment.

oHumanism. This much more recent school of thought came as a reaction to behaviorism and Psychoanalysis, and emphasizes the importance of values, intentions, and meaning in the individual. The concept of the "self" is a central focus for most humanistic psychologists.

oCognitivism. This branch of psychology believes that psychology should be concerned with a person's internal representations of the world and with the internal or functional organization of the mind.

As psychology moved away from its philosophical roots, psychologists began to employ more and more scientific methods to study human behavior. Today, researchers employ a variety of scientific methods, including experiments, correlational studies, longitudinal studies, and others to test, explain, and predict behavior.

Areas of Psychology

Students of psychology soon realize that the subject covers a huge range of material. The diverse topics students might study include social behavior, personality, research methods, therapeutic techniques, and much more. oIndustrial-Organizational Psychology is the area of psychology that uses psychological research to enhance work performance, select employee, improve product design, and enhance usability.

oPersonality Psychology looks at the various elements that make up individual personalities.

oSchool Psychology is the branch of psychology that works within the educational system to help children with emotional, social, and academic issues.

oSocial Psychology is a discipline that uses scientific methods to study social influence, social perception, and social interaction. Social psychology studies diverse subjects including group behavior, social perception, leadership, nonverbal behavior, conformity, aggression, and prejudice.

Today, psychologists prefer to use more objective scientific methods to understand, explain, and predict human behavior. Psychological studies are highly structured, beginning with a hypothesis that is then empirically tested. Academic psychologists focus on the study of different sub-topics within psychology including personality psychology, social psychology, and developmental psychology. These psychologists conduct basic research that seeks to expand our theoretical knowledge, while other researchers conduct applied research that seeks to solve everyday problems. Applied psychology focuses on the use of different psychological principles to solve real world problems. Psychology - Resistance to Change

It is a known fact that all people have an inertia against or resistance towards change. In the study of psychology, there have been many reasons put forward for such resistance to change. The single most important consideration would be the risk of change is greater than the risk of staying put. This is because while current practices have been tried and simulated on historical cases, a new practice requires one to venture into uncharted territories as there are no models for the new practice. Even if we are not concerned about the probability of success, any criticisms of current practices are likely more muted than those levied on new practices because the former have precedent cases to fall back on.

Emotionally, people also feel connected to the older people who are identified with the current and past practices. That is often the case when we see people quoting ancient Feng Shui classics to cite the relevance of their existing Geomancy practice. Another manifestation of this comes from people who quotes renowned but demised Feng Shui greats or claims to belong to lineage of these Feng Shui greats.
 
As much as people will loathe to admit, their inertia to change has also been subconsciously driven by their fear of lack of competence to change. Who would not want to be the pilot of a new and successful venture?   But to go for the new venture and then expose one's own incompetence is more embarrassing than staying status quo. To follow someone who took the lead to a change also means he downgraded to the status of follower, so he will naturally want to stay as an opponent to the change rather than be a follower to the change. It is also emotionally unappealing to forsake something they have a higher chance of success because they are familiar with it for something they have a lower chance of succeeding because it requires them to venture into uncharted territory.

Any dispatcher of any police station will tell you the same thing. And, I'm sure we've all heard that full moons bring out all the crazy people, and that anytime there is a full moon it's important to put more police officers on duty that evening.

Now then, what about solar flare activity? Does it affect human behavior and psychology? We know a full moon does, and we know extreme temperatures do, and with a solar flare you have increased atmospheric heat, and increased solar radiation. Now then, let me give you a quick little theory.

We need to do more studies on this, because it appears that many human scientists are not looking here, and when I go onto the Internet and try to search these things, I don't come up with much. The Role of Jealousy in the Psychology of Love

Anyone who has loved, and maybe anyone who has ever formed an emotional bond with another human, has felt the emotion of jealousy. Characterised as the "green-eyed monster", jealousy is a frequently destructive emotion that nevertheless plays a central role in the psychology of love. This article looks at what jealousy is, the differences in its expression, and how sexual selection caused it to become a part of the mosaic of emotions that comprise the human experience.

What is jealousy?

When a person is described as feeling "jealous", they are feeling a combination of emotions such as insecurity, anger and fear. This combination arises in connection with the perceived possibility of a loss of an emotional connection with another human. Although jealousy is not limited to expression in the romantic sphere (a child's resentment at their parent's giving attention to a newborn sibling is a form of jealousy), we will only examine jealousy as it relates to the psychology of love.

The Role of Jealousy in the Psychology of Love

A person typically feels jealous when someone who they have a romantic interest in gives attention to a sexual rival. Jealousy is rooted in the feat that their romantic interest will fall in love with another person. Unfortunately, this emotion often causes a person to constantly monitor the whereabouts and attitudes of their love interest, to interrogate them regarding how they feel about other people, to demand assurances and promises of eternal love, and to become suspicious and paranoid. Some people have suggested that love is not true love if there is no jealousy component involved; the irony of this is that the behaviours caused by jealousy often force lovers apart, mostly because having a jealous lover can make a person feel imprisoned.

Why does jealousy exist?

The Selfish Gene Theory gives a number of clues as to why the emotion of jealousy exists and how it could have arisen. If you consider that the body and the emotions felt by the human mind exist to ensure the replication of the genes that code for them, these genes would have evolved to detect threats to their propagation. One of the foremost threats is naturally of a potential sexual partner choosing to reproduce with another person, thereby denying someone else's genes the opportunity.

From an evolutionary perspective, feeling jealousy might make it more likely that a person ensures that their genes are passed on and that their offspring survive to the next generation, because that person will seek to drive away threats from sexual competitors. Given that jealousy makes it more likely that the person feeling it will reproduce, their genes will replicate more frequently, and therefore the genes that code for a trait such as jealous behaviour will become more common in the next generation.

Gender differences in jealousy

To understand the gender differences in jealousy, it is necessary to understand the Parental Investment Model. To summarise, the objective of the male sexual desire is to inseminate women; the objective of the female sexual desire is to become inseminated by men whose genes and behaviour make their offspring more likely to survive.

For men with female sexual partners, therefore, the biggest risk is that another man will get the female pregnant. For women with male sexual partners, the biggest risk is that another woman will attract the resources of the male and leave the former women's offspring without resources and protection. This difference is expressed by the different circumstances under which jealousy arises: men are more likely to feel jealousy at the possibility of sexual infidelity on the part of the female, whereas women are more likely to feel jealousy at the possibility of the male transferring his affection to another woman.

Advertising has been a form of glorifying or gaining publicity for goods and merchandise since very early times. In fact, advertising has been around as an informal concept since the beginning of civilizations and former methods were oral advertising or claiming the benefits of products verbally when merchants sold goods to people directly on the streets. However with the advent of paper and writing, advertising took a more formal shape.

Egyptians and Ancient Greeks used the papyrus for advertising and rock painting was also used. Advertising in English in magazines as we know today dates back to the end of the 17th century and newspaper advertising in America began during the first part of the 18th century with advertisements for estates. With the growth of mass media and different forms and avenues of communication like radio, TV, newspapers, magazines, and of course the internet in the 20th century, advertising started becoming an important aspect for commercialization of products. People started understanding the potential of advertisements and it became a business with the establishment of advertising agencies with the first advertising agency in US opened in 1841.

The Psychology of Advertising

With advertising becoming a business in itself, the methods of using advertisements became even more formalized, controlled and systematic and the advertisements for products started appearing as newspaper ads, on billboards, hoardings, as handbills, leaflets, on magazines, newspapers, on TV and radio as commercials and more recently on the internet. Web advertising is now a very powerful means to take the message across to the customers. However to actually appeal to customers, advertising will have to work in accordance with the principles of psychology and sociology. Thus an advertiser or an advertising professional will also have to be a sociologist and a psychologist to really have an impact on the minds of consumers.

The principles of advertising are largely based on cognitive psychology and the psychological processes of attention, perception, association and memory to bring out the complete impact or uses of a product or 'brand'. Any advertisement will have to first focus on the attention that it is able to capture of the consumers. Strong messages, strong visuals and glaring colors are sometimes used on hoardings and billboards. For commercials, attention catching clothes and attractive models are sometimes used.

Once the attention is drawn with the colors and the sounds or words, the focus is on retaining consumer interests by using 'association'. Themes or products which a particular segment of customers could associate with are used thus for baby food, mothers and babies are featured so association would have more to do with relevance or context of the advertisement. Certain colors also have associative value and certain brands and companies use a specific color to promote their products. For example easygroup uses orange and Vodafone uses red as standard color for all advertising. The company logo or symbol is also a part of developing a brand and helps in giving identity to a brand and has a strong associative value.

The association should be such that it not only serves the purpose of quick understanding and perception of the consumers but is also retained in their memory for a long time. Thus memory or retention is an important aspect of the psychology of advertising as only an advertisement that consumers can easily remember for a long time for its novelty or use of words, colors and figures will be the most effective.

The development of a 'brand' is just as effective because a brand helps in driving attention, in developing association (for example, we associate Coke or Pepsi with youth, celebration and a soft drink popular for all occasions) and in memory or retention of any image associated with a service or product. So branding is vital in advertisements as brands help in giving a name and distinct identity of a product. So a Gucci bag or a Sony camera is known for the brand rather than the product.

A brand is recognized in terms of its name, its quality and its reputation with advertisements these days highlighting the uniqueness of brands. For example, HSBC recent advertisements across airports around the world, focus on the differing points of view and different likes and preferences of people across cultures. So when you see such advertisements showing two different perspectives for the same thing, you know this is HSBC. Certain brands develop taglines or motto that sets the brand apart and gives it a distinct character.

You might have wondered why models look lifeless on fashion shows. Fashion shows are usually arranged for designer brands selling clothes and accessories and usually these fashion shows try to accentuate the clothes and that is why the models tend to be rather 'expressionless'. Although these fashion shows project the clothes sans the emoting, in case of commercials, expressions are widely used because through visual medium, emotions have to be transported through the screen to the consumers to create an effect. Putting across a message through a medium is a challenge and advertisers use emotions widely to help people retain the message that describes the product.

Whatever it is, the mantra is to create an impact and have a lasting effect on the minds of the consumers. The message of the product, the motto of the brand and the mind of the consumer, these are the three Ms that are important in advertising.

However it is important to understand that advertising will have to be different for different media. Radio ads should focus on the strength of sounds and words; internet ads will focus on visuals and colors; newspaper ads will focus on space and the theme; and TV ads would focus more on the emotions and the context used. Using motion, capitalized letters, contrasting colors etc are all important and in order to draw attention to the product, some form of highlighting of the product is also done.

How does all this affect the masses, the consumers who will actually buy the product? Apart from the attention drawing process, the retention producing sounds and words that help memory and the associative value of the products and the advertisements, there is another factor namely necessity of the consumer. Advertising is not just enough, as a customer is driven to buy a product largely considering the necessity, quality, features and price of the product.

If a company solely focuses on the physical aspects of any product, like say - an Apple iPhone looks good on the table, then it's probably not the best method to have an impact on the market. The features are as important as the price. Then of course, the 'hype' that triggers a certain mass psychology in a certain way so people sometimes queue up for newly released products. But trying to tap in on mass psychology or a kind of hype or hysteria for a product is only a short term advertising strategy. The longer term establishment of a product is through real quality, usability and price and all companies should emphasize on these ultimately.

Competition may have a lot to do with the type of advertising used by companies, so the weaknesses of other similar products by other companies are highlighted subtly although this may not always have a positive impact on the mind of the customer. Usually most products advertised as unique and not even remotely similar to other products can have a positive effect and can effectively generate hype and consumer curiosity. Focusing on the unique and highlighting the dissimilarity and novelty of a product in a way that attracts curiosity is a certain method to improve popularity of a product, so this gives consumers the reason to know more and they will enter the shops to enquire about the product. Although celebrities are largely used in advertisements to endorse products or promote a brand, the celebrity culture affects only the youth strongly so the entire value of celebrity advertising may be a bit overrated. This will require a separate discussion on celebrity culture.

The final goal of all advertisers and promoters is to ensure that products and services sell and to increase sales and potential consumer interest creating curiosity is a first short term step while introducing a new product into the market. Retaining customer interest is a different ballgame and requires reputation of the brand, product quality, right pricing and continued high quality advertising to ultimately ensure success of the product.
